How much should you give to a group gift?
2 min read
You’ve received a wishlist link and you want to join in. Then the question comes: how much is right? There’s no fixed rule, but a few simple guidelines help.
Start with what you’d spend on a gift anyway
The easiest approach: give what you would have spent on a present you picked yourself. If you’d normally buy a €30 gift for a colleague’s birthday, €30 is a good contribution. Your money now goes towards something they really want.
Think about how close you are
- Colleagues and acquaintances: a smaller contribution is completely normal.
- Friends: usually similar to what you’d spend on a birthday present.
- Close friends and family: often more, especially for milestones like weddings, a new baby or a 30th birthday.
Look at the goal, not at others
Group gifts work because different people give different amounts. Don’t compare - any contribution moves the wish closer to its target. If the person shows how much is left, a contribution that helps close the gap can feel especially good near the end.
Small amounts are welcome
If money is tight, a small contribution with a warm message is a lovely gift. Most people care far more about the message than the number.
Anonymous or with your name?
Both are fine. Giving with your name lets the person thank you. Giving anonymously can feel more comfortable if you prefer to keep amounts private.
Don’t forget the message
A few personal words make a contribution feel like a real present. Mention a shared memory or what you hope they’ll enjoy about the gift.
