How to organise a group birthday gift (without chasing anyone for money)

2 min read

One great present beats ten small ones. A group gift lets friends combine their budgets into something the birthday person actually wants. The hard part is usually the organising: collecting money, tracking who paid and paying it all back to one person’s card.

Here’s a simple way to do it.

1. Find out what they really want

Ask a close friend or partner, or check whether the birthday person already has a wishlist. If they don’t, a few safe directions: an experience (concert tickets, a spa day, a cooking class), a big-ticket item they keep mentioning, or a contribution towards a trip.

2. Set a target and a deadline

Decide on the amount and when you need it. A clear target - for example €300 for headphones - helps everyone decide how much to give. A deadline a few days before the birthday gives you time to buy and wrap.

3. Share one link, not a bank account number

Sending your IBAN around a group chat is awkward and hard to track. A shared wishlist link lets everyone pay in a few taps, with their own card or payment app, and shows the total in real time.

4. Let people give what they can

Suggest an amount if you like, but make it clear any contribution is welcome. Some people will give €10, others €50. That’s fine - the goal is the gift, not equal shares.

5. Add a group message

Many people like to leave a few words with their contribution. Collected together, these messages become part of the present.

6. Hand over the gift

Either buy the gift yourself with the collected money, or - even simpler - let the birthday person create the wishlist and receive the money directly, so they can choose the exact model, size or date themselves.

Do it on GiftRise

Create a wish with a target, share the link in your group chat and watch it fill up. Contributors pay with a card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or a local payment method such as iDEAL, and every gift goes to the balance of the person you’re celebrating in full.
